My Food Sensitivity Journey

Last night was a rough one for me… We went to a last-minute dinner at a friend’s house, and there was a minimal amount of food I could eat. There was plenty of food and it all looked great, but with my laundry list of food sensitivities, I was unable to have most of it. =(

I am nearing the finish line of my food sensitivity, food elimination journey. I can see it, I can even taste it! 😉 So for some reason during the last few days, I am finding myself more agitated about my food restrictions. It’s like at the end of the school year and it’s almost summertime; all you can think about is being outside and in the sun, not inside in a classroom! I think I’m getting that kind of itch! Usually, as long as I can bring my own substitutes (like salad dressing) when we eat out and/or go to family/friend functions, I am good to go. But when we go somewhere last minute, especially to someone’s house for dinner, or out to eat with a group of people, I find myself not as excited to go because I am not prepared. When I don’t have my food substitutes with me, I feel insecure and embarrassed, having to ask what ingredients they use or if there is “added sugar” in any of their sauces. More often than not, there is more I can’t have compared to what I can have. Sometimes this doesn’t bother me at all; other times I feel very frustrated.

I know it would be easier to not go and just eat at home, or only eat at the “Megan friendly” restaurants. But I don’t want to miss out on meals with the people I care about. I also don’t want to prevent my partner from going either. He shouldn’t have to be restricted just because I am, ya know? It’s just one of those things that you have to adjust to. I’m almost 3 months in and I am still adjusting. It’s not easy, but the benefits outweigh the uncomfortable moments. I know I’ll get through it, and if you are reading this and struggling yourself, you will too. Hang in there fellow food restricted peeps! =)
